harbinger of spring

(c)2004 | striped crocus in full bloom

Spring is here! well, the first harbingers of spring have arrived in force: the crocuses! they are blooming in many places, although mostly in warm microclimates where the soil can retain lots of heat. there are also many daffodils and tulips that are sprouting, but they have awhile to go before they are ready to bloom. so for now, i will have to be satisfied with the beautiful crocuses... and i am! actually, out of the three (daffodils, tulips, and crocuses), i think the crocuses are my favorite. they are the go-getters. their early blooming cycle is a welcome treat to color-starved eyes. i found violet ones, violet/white striped ones, and white ones, but still cannot find any yellow or pink ones... but i'm sure they're out there.

it's supposed to get rather cold in the next few days, with the possibility of some snow accumulation. UGH! i'm done with winter, but it seems that winter may not be done with us, yet. in any event, i'm hoping that the blooms will survive somehow. i really don't want them to be set back a couple of weeks on account of some silly snow. but such is life, and Nature. i'm enjoying them while they last, and that's all anyone can really do.

both of the following kitties live at emily's dad's house. but he doesn't appreciate them like I do.

(c)2004 | star, the cat with a faerie in her

first of all, there's Star. some call her Starbucks, but since i hate starbucks (the evil monopolistic coffee corporation) and she's a little faerie in disguise, i prefer Star. she's shy and doesn't come out of hiding very often, so when she does, it's a special treat. i've been winning her over with affection and calm moves (so as not to scare her away), and it seems to be working. i even got some lengthy purr's out of her the other day when i took this. she was very interested in the camera, wondering just what it was for. i think she knows more than she lets on, which is why we think she's a faerie reborn or something. she's such a great kitty.

next is Edmund, the cat who acts like a highbrow english gentleman. he's almost the complete opposite of Star, being much *ahem* fatter and in your face. he's a slut for attention! he's also one of the softest cats i've ever given pets... and he wants lots of them. he is also curious about the camera, especially the focusing lasers that freak him out. that's why his eyes are so wide; he's wondering what the hell just happened.
