a day of ice and snow

spectacular ice formations at Frankfort Springs, Raccoon Creek State Park, Pennsylvania

yesterday, scott and i went to Raccoon Creek State Park. ostensibly, we went to share his one sled and do some cross-country sledding (that's where you hike along finding slopes and hills as you go... sled down them and move on to the next one). that aspect was pretty fun, though i was more impressed with the ice formations we saw when we hiked back to Frankfort Springs. everything was covered in thick sheets of ice, almost including the gaping entrance to the rock ledges surrounding the small waterfall (which is now nearly solid ice, with just a bare trickle of water snaking its way underneath)

underneath the rock ledge, behind the icicles, with the sunlight shining through

here, you can see the icicles from beneath the rock shelf, with the sun coming through. on the undersurface of the shelf, hundreds of small icicles dangled from cracks that moisture seeps through in warmer weather.

after checking out the ice, we hiked around for awhile more, checking out the transformed landscape. we saw plenty of deer, though they didn't seem too afraid of us... we could approach slowly even after they heard us crunching through the icy snow. but even still, very few of my still images came out very nice... deer are just too well camoflaged to show up dramatically. i did shoot a few short video clips of them dashing throught the forest, but obviously i can't post them here.

and then, on the way home, i captured a bunch more light trails of various things... it never seems to get old, does it? i'll post those images after you've had a chance to digest what's here so far.
