i finally got around to visiting Phipps this past weekend with my hunny, who has never been there. the occasion was valentine's day, but i never need an excuse to go to phipps for many hours.

i always enjoy seeing bonsai-style trees...

...i cannot wait until it's warmer and the japanese garden is open!

but the real reason we visited phipps on saturday was to check out the orchids. this is another favorite of mine...and where phipps is concerned, there are many favorites.

i took some digital photos of things, but i took even more film photos that will probably turn out better than this small sample here. it was hard to remember sometimes to take photos with both the digital and film cameras to adequately cover the beauty around us. some shots i thought i took with the digicam didn't show up, so they must still be latent images on emulsion-coated acetate base, kicking around somewhere in my sierra club bag. gotta get them developed soon...

i had so much fun on saturday! not only did i get to see phipps and introduce it to the love of my life, we did a bunch of other fun stuff, too.

after phipps started filling up with more and more people, as it always seems to do in the afternoon, we headed off to the weird land known as south craig street. it always seems to have it's own set of rules and behaviors, somewhat independent of the rest of oakland, as if it's its own country somehow.

anyway, got some pad thai and eggrolls at Lulu's, which was SO yummy! i miss that place. then we jetted off to catch a movie, 50 first dates, which wasn't too bad. it was somewhat predictable, but not too much so. adam sandler wasn't to obnoxious...in fact, he was a rather nice guy throughout the movie. and drew barrymore? well, i need never go into just how much i enjoy her... she was great in the movie.

after the flick, we went to the store and got all kinds of yummy treats to munch on back at my place.

we had a great night.

there is ice still clinging to many spots all over the landscape. after a couple of days of melting, the cold weather has returned to refreeze everything. some of the ice below the top layer of ice has melted away, leaving a crust of almost transparent ice behind. it almost seems to float above the ground, held aloft by the browning-green grass hidden for weeks.

update: upon farther inspection, as opposed to closer inspection, that ice seems as if clouds view from above, and the unruly jungle below... that is, if i look at it without my spectacles from my normal viewing distance... such poor eyesight.

i would not enjoy going blind(er).
